Sick child's Christmas tree stolen

A Howard County girl got a visit from the Grinch. Now police are looking for her lost Christmas lights.

The Howard County Sheriff's Department says someone stole lighted Christmas candy canes and a lighted aluminum tree from in front of her Kokomo house.

It was one of nine houses hit on the west side of the city late Tuesday night or early Wednesday morning.

Three-year-old Marissa Gallaher's family Christmas tree was out on the front lawn because of her medical condition. She's had a tracheotomy tube in her throat nearly all her life after a respiratory problem called RSV.

Contact with a real or fake tree could hurt her breathing.

"She opens the window," says family friend Brian Blunt. "She'll look out the window at the Christmas decorations. Of course most of them aren't there now."

Because of the device in her throat, Marissa speaks little but has learned sign language.

"She just went over her and signed TREE," says Brian. "She knew it was missing. She seemed to be disappointed."

Her father Scott says the tree is not the important thing. It's about the season of giving.

"I hope that we can make my daughter understand that," he says, "whether we have the tree or not."

In line with the giving spirit of the season, Captain Napoleon Lea of the Howard County Sheriff's Department says several offers have come in offering to replace the tree and lights.

Police say you can protect yourself from Christmas Grinchs by putting a small lable with your name on strings of lights and write your name on larger decorations. If they're stolen and found, police can return them to you.
